Examing an Ecosystem
Eco-walk:
(pg.35 of UP)
- Purpose: To see and personally experience how man has effected the envrionment
- Walk around your neighborhood (or outside the school in our case) and observe the things that mankind has developed that are harmful and, or beneficial to the ecosystem.
- Use the table on UP page 35 to fill in some things that you observe out on the street and a positive and negative thing about it.( eg: cars; good for humans because of transportation purposes; bad for the environment because of harmful emmisions)
Study of Pond Water:
(worksheet on pg. 36A & 36B of UP)
- Purpose: Since it is not within reach to build/create an ecosystem in the science room, we studied pond water to get a feel for how an ecosystem may look like.
- Find the Biotic and Abiotic factors in the pond water. (eg: Planerium; Flatworm, is a biotic factor while Water is an Abiotic factor.)
- In the water besides the Planerium were: Algae= the producers
- Bacteria/ micro-organisms= the consumers
- Planerium= the larger consumers
Important Vocab:
- Abiotic Factors: The non-living factors that make up an ecosystem. (sun, soil, water..ect.)
- Biotic Factors: The living factors that make up an ecosystem. (plants, animals, bacteria..ect.)
- Producer: The bottom of the food chain; makes its own food from the energy coming from the sun. (plants)
- Consumer: One level higher than producers; gains energy by eating producers. ( insects, animals...ect.)
